Varuna

वरुण
The all-seeing god who judges every broken oath and every violated truth

Varuna is one of the most important deities in the Rigveda — the god of the cosmic waters, the night sky, and the guardian of Rita (cosmic order). He sees everything: a bird flying, a ship sailing, a secret thought. He punishes those who violate cosmic truth with disease and binds sinners with his noose. He is also the god of forgiveness — the Vedic prayer to Varuna asking for release from sin is one of the most moving hymns in world literature. Over time Varuna faded in importance as Vishnu and Shiva rose, but in the Rigveda he rivals Indra in majesty.

A 60-second practice

Think of one oath or commitment you have made and not fully kept. The Vedic prayer to Varuna simply says: I have broken your law — forgive me. Say that, genuinely, for 60 seconds.

Best at night — Varuna rules the starlit sky.
