Chapter 12: The Path of Love

भक्ति योग
Of all yogis, the one who loves God with complete faith is the nearest to me

Chapter 12 is the shortest and most tender chapter of the Gita. Arjuna asks: 'Which is better — devotion to the personal God, or meditation on the formless Brahman?' Krishna says both work, but devotion to the personal form is easier for most people. He then describes the ideal devotee: one who causes no distress to others, is not disturbed by the world, free from attachment and fear, steady in happiness and sorrow, not dependent on approval. This description is as much a character portrait as a spiritual teaching.

A 60-second practice

Read slowly: 'One who is not envious but is a kind friend to all beings, who is not possessive and is free from ego, who is the same in happiness and sorrow, who is tolerant…' — that is Krishna's portrait of the person nearest to God.

Best at dusk — the hour of devotional prayer.
