Nalanda (Modern)
नालन्दा
The ruins of the world's first great university — and the Nalanda University revived nearby
The archaeological ruins of Nalanda Mahavihara in Bihar are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The red-brick ruins of the enormous monastery complex — housing halls, temples, and library buildings — are hauntingly beautiful. Nearby, Nalanda University was re-established in 2014 as a modern international university, symbolically reviving the ancient tradition of free, open exchange of knowledge.
