Sarnath

सारनाथ
The Deer Park where the Buddha gave his first sermon and set the Wheel of Dharma turning

Sarnath near Varanasi is where the Buddha delivered his first discourse (Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta) to five companions after his enlightenment, setting the 'Wheel of Dharma' in motion. The Dhamek Stupa here marks the spot. Sarnath has yielded the famous Ashoka Lion Capital — four lions back to back on a wheel — which became India's national emblem. It is the site of the formal founding of the Buddhist Sangha (monastic community).

Share one piece of genuine wisdom with someone today — not advice, but something you know to be true from experience. That is Sarnath's energy: turning the wheel by transmitting the dharma.
