Shani Dev

शनि देव
The lord of karma and discipline who rewards patience and punishes pride

Shani Dev is the god of Saturn, karma, justice, and discipline. Son of Surya (the Sun) and Chhaya (Shadow), he is the most feared of the Navagraha. His gaze is said to bring hardship, but those hardships are karmic corrections — Shani does not punish randomly; he delivers the consequences of past actions. He moves slowly through the zodiac (taking about 2.5 years per sign), and the seven-and-a-half-year period called Sade Sati is considered a major karmic reckoning. His lessons ultimately produce integrity and resilience.

A 60-second practice

Light a small oil lamp (or candle) on Saturday evening. Sit with it for one minute reflecting on what karma — good or difficult — you are working through right now. No judgment, just awareness.

Best on Saturday evenings — Shani's primary worship time.
