Raja Yoga

राज योग
Master the mind through meditation and you master everything

Raja Yoga ('royal yoga') is the path of meditation and mental discipline, systematised by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras and taught in Chapter 6 of the Bhagavad Gita. Krishna tells Arjuna: 'Wherever the restless mind wanders, bring it back under the control of the Self.' The eight limbs of Raja Yoga — from ethical restraints (yamas) through to samadhi (absorption) — form the most complete psychological system in ancient India. Modern mindfulness meditation is a simplified descendant.

A 60-second practice

Sit upright. For 60 seconds, every time a thought arises, simply note 'thinking' and return to the breath. You don't have to stop thoughts — just stop following them. That return is Raja Yoga.

Best at dawn and dusk — the two sandhya periods.
