Mahavir Jayanti
महावीर जयन्ती
The celebration of Mahavira's birth — the most important Jain festival
Mahavir Jayanti celebrates the birth of Vardhamana Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, in Vaishali (Bihar) around 599 BCE. It falls on the 13th day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra. Jains mark the day with processions (raths) carrying images of Mahavira, prayers, fasting, charity, and the practice of non-violence. Temples are specially decorated and Jain philosophical discourses are given. It is a national holiday in India.
