Thich Nhat Hanh

The Vietnamese monk who brought mindfulness to the modern world

Thich Nhat Hanh (1926–2022) was a Vietnamese Thiền Buddhist monk, peace activist, and prolific author who introduced 'Engaged Buddhism' — the application of Buddhist principles to social and political problems. Exiled from Vietnam for his anti-war activism during the Vietnam War, he founded Plum Village monastery in France. His books, especially 'The Miracle of Mindfulness', introduced millions of Westerners to Buddhist meditation. He taught that every breath, every step, is an opportunity for awakening.

Walk 10 steps right now, extremely slowly. With each step, feel the full sensation of your foot meeting the ground. This is Thich Nhat Hanh's walking meditation.

Walking meditation: best at any transition between tasks.
