वृन्दावन
Krishna's forest of love — where the divine plays the flute at the edge of the Yamuna

Vrindavan is the sacred town in Mathura district, Uttar Pradesh, where Krishna spent his childhood and youth. It is surrounded by the Yamuna River and dotted with thousands of temples. The 12 forests (dvadasha vanas) of Braj are where Krishna performed his cosmic sports (lilas) — stealing butter, playing with the gopis, dancing the Rasa Lila. Vrindavan is considered eternal — devotees believe Krishna is still present there, playing his flute for those with eyes to see. Janmashtami (Krishna's birth) is celebrated here with extraordinary fervour.

A 60-second practice

Play any music you love for 60 seconds and let it lift you. Krishna's flute music was said to make the gopis abandon everything to dance. What music pulls you toward the divine?

Best at dusk — the time of Krishna's evening lila.
