Myth, geography and ritual on one thread

The river that fell from heaven

Follow the Ganga from Shiva's matted hair down to the ghats of Varanasi, where the story is still enacted every evening in fire and song.

  1. 🌙
    Shivaशिव

In the old story, the celestial river Ganga agreed to descend to earth — but her fall would have shattered the world. Shiva caught her in his matted hair, breaking the flood gently, and let her down in streams.

  2. 🏞️
    Gangaगङ्गा

The Ganga is both river and goddess. To bathe in her is said to wash away lifetimes; her water is carried home in sealed vessels to bless weddings and last rites alike.

  3. 🕯️
    Varanasiवाराणसी

At Varanasi — one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth — the river turns north, and the city of Shiva rises from her banks in a crescent of stone steps, temples and smoke.

  4. 🌙
    Mahashivaratriमहाशिवरात्रि

On Mahashivaratri, the great night of Shiva, the ghats fill with pilgrims keeping vigil — the myth of the descent retold in lamplight where the river actually flows.
