Guru Amar Das Ji
ਗੁਰੂ ਅਮਰ ਦਾਸ
The third Guru who abolished caste distinctions and championed women's rights
Guru Amar Das Ji (1479–1574) became the third Guru at age 73. He established the Baoli (step-well) at Goindwal as a pilgrimage site open to all castes, created the system of 22 manjis (preaching centres) to spread Sikhism, and famously insisted that visitors — even Emperor Akbar — eat in the langar (sitting alongside all others) before meeting him. He abolished the purdah system for women and condemned sati (widow immolation).
