Kali

काली
The fierce goddess of time, death, and liberation who devours ego

Kali is the most fierce form of the Divine Mother, the goddess of time, death, and the power of transformation. She is depicted with dark blue or black skin, wild hair, a garland of skulls, standing on Shiva. She arose from Durga's forehead during battle and began destroying demons indiscriminately in a battle rage — only stopped when she accidentally stepped on Shiva, her husband. Far from being a goddess of evil, Kali destroys the ego and the illusion of separateness, offering the deepest liberation.

A 60-second practice

Write on paper one fear or ego-driven thought that holds you back. Then tear it up. Kali's energy is about releasing what the ego clings to. Notice how it feels to let go.

Best at midnight — Kali's hour of transformation.
