Lumbini

लुम्बिनी
The sacred garden in Nepal where the Buddha was born

Lumbini is in the Rupandehi district of southern Nepal, the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama. Queen Maya Devi is said to have given birth in a garden here, holding a sal tree branch. Emperor Ashoka visited in 249 BCE and erected a pillar confirming it as the Buddha's birthplace. Lumbini is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the four main Buddhist pilgrimage sites. It contains the Maya Devi Temple, sacred pools, and monasteries from Buddhist nations worldwide.
