तिरुपति
The richest and most visited temple on Earth — the abode of Venkatesha on the seven hills

The Tirumala Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, is the most visited religious site in the world, receiving over 50,000 to 100,000 pilgrims daily. It is dedicated to Venkatesha (Balaji) — a form of Vishnu. Devotees offer their hair (tonsure) as a symbol of surrendering ego. The temple is atop the Tirumala Hills (the Seven Hills or Saptagiri), considered to be the hood of the divine serpent Adisesha. Its annual income makes it the richest temple on Earth.

A 60-second practice

Touch your head. Now imagine offering something you are proud of — an achievement, a reputation, a fixed idea — back to the universe. That is the spirit of the Tirupati tonsure.

Best at dawn — the time of Suprabhatam (morning hymn to Venkatesha).
