Vishwamitra

विश्वामित्र
The warrior king who became a brahmin sage through sheer tapasya — and composed the Gayatri Mantra

Vishwamitra was born a Kshatriya (warrior) king named Kaushika. His rivalry with Vasishtha drove him to an extraordinary tapasya (austerity) through which he progressively achieved the rank of Rishi, Maharishi, and ultimately Brahmarshi. He is credited with composing the Gayatri Mantra, the most sacred verse in the Vedas. He was also the teacher of young Rama and Lakshmana, training them to face the demons guarding his sacrificial fires.

A 60-second practice

Recite the Gayatri Mantra once, slowly: 'Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah, Tat Savitur Varenyam, Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi, Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat.' Vishwamitra composed it for all humanity.

Best at sunrise — the Gayatri Mantra is a solar prayer.
