बोध गया
The site of the Buddha's enlightenment — the most sacred place in Buddhism

Bodh Gaya in Bihar is the site where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment (bodhi) under the Bodhi Tree around 528 BCE. The Mahabodhi Temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, marks the exact spot. The Bodhi Tree growing there today is said to be a descendant of the original tree. Bodh Gaya draws pilgrims from every Buddhist tradition worldwide. Emperor Ashoka visited and built the first temple here. It is the most sacred of the four Buddhist holy sites.

A 60-second practice

Sit under any tree today. Close your eyes. Feel supported by the earth beneath you. This is the posture of the Buddha's enlightenment — receiving the earth as witness.

Best at dawn — the hour of the Buddha's awakening.
