Kushinagar

कुशीनगर
Where the Buddha passed into Mahaparinirvana — and taught that everything is impermanent

Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh is where Siddhartha Gautama passed into Mahaparinirvana at age 80. He lay between two sal trees and gave his final instruction: 'All conditioned things are impermanent. Work out your salvation with diligence.' The Mahaparinirvana Temple contains a 6-metre reclining Buddha statue in the posture of his final moments. Along with Lumbini, Bodh Gaya, and Sarnath, it is one of the four principal Buddhist pilgrimage sites.

A 60-second practice

Reflect on impermanence: one thing in your life is changing right now, whether you like it or not. Can you hold that change with acceptance rather than resistance?

Best at dusk — the hour of endings and transitions.
