Ganesh Chaturthi

गणेश चतुर्थी
Ten days welcoming Ganesha into homes and public life before immersing him in the sea

Ganesh Chaturthi is a ten-day festival celebrating the birth of Ganesha, beginning on the fourth day (chaturthi) of Bhadrapada. Elaborate clay Ganesha idols are installed in homes and public pandals (marquees), worshipped with offerings of modak (sweet dumplings), flowers, and prayers. On the final day, the idols are immersed in water (Visarjan), symbolising Ganesha's return to Mount Kailash. The festival was transformed into a mass public event by Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1893 to foster national unity under colonial rule.
