Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji
ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਗੋਬਿੰਦ
The warrior Guru who united spiritual authority with temporal power
Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji (1595–1644) was the sixth Sikh Guru and the son of the martyred Guru Arjan. Following his father's execution, he adopted two swords — Miri (temporal authority) and Piri (spiritual authority) — transforming the Sikh community into a martial brotherhood capable of self-defence. He built the Akal Takht (Throne of the Timeless) opposite the Golden Temple. He also secured the release of 52 Hindu kings imprisoned by the Mughals, earning the title 'Bandi Chhod' — liberator of the imprisoned.
