Jain Sects

जैन संप्रदाय
The two main streams of Jainism — sky-clad monks and white-clad monks

Jainism split primarily into two major sects: Digambara ('sky-clad') monks who practise total nudity as the ultimate renunciation of possessions, and Shvetambara ('white-clad') monks and nuns who wear white robes. The split occurred around 300 BCE over disagreements on whether Mahavira was married (Shvetambara says yes) and whether women can attain liberation in their current birth (Digambara says no). Within Shvetambara there are further sub-sects like Sthanakvasi and Terapanthi.

Reflect: in your own life, where do you cling to comfort that you could release? The Digambara's radical renunciation asks what you truly need versus what you merely want.
