Rishabhadeva

ऋषभदेव
The first Tirthankara, the original teacher of civilization and liberation

Rishabhadeva is the first of the 24 Tirthankaras of the current cosmic cycle. He is considered the founder of civilisation, teaching humanity agriculture, arts, and the 72 scripts. He is also mentioned in the Bhagavata Purana as a great king and sage. His symbol is the bull. He attained moksha at Mount Ashtapada (believed to be in the Himalayas or modern Kailash). Jains consider him the original teacher of dharma who taught when the world was in its ascending phase and humans needed guidance for the first time.

A 60-second practice

Think of one skill or piece of knowledge you have received from others — a teacher, a parent, a tradition. Take one minute to feel genuine gratitude for that transmission.

Best at dawn — the beginning of light, as Rishabha is the beginning of dharma.
