Pawapuri

पावापुरी
The lotus lake where Mahavira attained moksha

Pawapuri in Bihar is the site where Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, attained Nirvana (moksha) in 527 BCE. The Jal Mandir (Water Temple) — a marble temple built on a raised platform in the middle of a lotus lake — marks the exact spot. The lake is full of lotus flowers and the whole site has an extraordinary stillness. Hundreds of thousands of Jains visit every year for Diwali (which in the Jain tradition commemorates Mahavira's nirvana, one day before the Hindu Diwali).

A 60-second practice

Find or imagine a still, clear pond. Imagine your mind as the lotus that rises from murky water to bloom in open air. That is Pawapuri.

Best at dawn.
