Tat Tvam Asi

तत् त्वम् असि
The most radical statement in world philosophy: you and the universe are one

Tat Tvam Asi ('That Thou Art') is one of the four Mahavakyas — Great Sayings — of the Upanishads, found in the Chandogya Upanishad. It is the declaration that the individual self (Atman) and the ultimate reality (Brahman) are identical. The sage Uddalaka teaches his son Shvetaketu: just as rivers lose their names when they flow into the ocean and become ocean itself, the individual soul is ultimately not separate from the source of all existence. This single sentence is the philosophical foundation of Advaita Vedanta.

A 60-second practice

Say quietly: 'That Thou Art.' The 'that' is the infinite. The 'thou' is you. For 60 seconds, rest in the possibility that there is no gap between the two. No analysis — just rest.

Best at dawn in the stillness before thought.
