Four places, one life

The awakening road

Birth, awakening, first teaching, final rest — the Buddha's life traced through the four great pilgrimage sites, from Lumbini to Kushinagar.

  1. 🌸
    Lumbiniलुम्बिनी

In a grove at Lumbini, near the present India–Nepal border, Siddhartha Gautama was born a prince — and, the stories say, a sage foretold he would either rule the world or renounce it.

  2. 🌳
    Bodh Gayaबोध गया

Years later, after luxury and near-starvation had both failed him, he sat beneath a pipal tree at Bodh Gaya and vowed not to rise until he understood. The tree that grows there now is tended as a descendant of that one.

  3. 🦌
    Sarnathसारनाथ

At the deer park of Sarnath he taught for the first time — the Four Noble Truths, the wheel of dharma set turning. Ashoka later raised a pillar here whose lion capital is now the emblem of India.

  4. 🕊️
    Kushinagarकुशीनगर

At Kushinagar, aged around eighty, he lay down between two sal trees and passed into final nirvana. His last recorded words: all conditioned things are impermanent — strive on with diligence.
