Khalsa

ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ
The community of initiated Sikhs who live as warriors, saints, and servants

The Khalsa is the initiated Sikh community created by Guru Gobind Singh Ji on Vaisakhi 1699. Members are initiated through the Amrit Sanchar ceremony, receiving Amrit (holy water stirred by a double-edged sword) and taking five vows. They adopt the surname Singh (male, meaning lion) or Kaur (female, meaning princess/lioness) and wear the five K's. The Khalsa motto: 'Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh' — the Khalsa belongs to God, victory belongs to God.

A 60-second practice

What does it mean to be both a saint and a soldier — gentle in spirit, fierce in justice? Sit with that paradox for one minute.
